Despite Years of Decline, Nearly 30,000 California Kids Hospitalized for Injuries in 2011

Child injuries severe enough to require a hospital stay declined in California by nearly 30% between 2001 and 2011. Still, injury prevention remains a priority in the state, as 28,421 children and youth ages 0-20 were hospitalized for injuries in 2011. See the numbers for your county>>

According to data recently updated on kidsdata.org, about three-quarters of nonfatal injuries requiring hospitalization among children are due to “unintentional” injuries, such as car accidents and falls. Self-inflicted injuries and assault are the next most common causes. In California, the rate of hospitalizations due to all injuries was 259 per 100,000 ages 0-20 in 2011. Among counties with available data, the rates ranged from 159.4 per 100,000 to 511.5.

Injuries are the leading cause of death among children and youth, and these injuries often are preventable. Unintentional injuries are the chief cause of death. Each year, about 9 million children and youth are treated in emergency rooms for unintentional injuries in the U.S. Injury treatment is the leading cause of medical spending for children in the nation, costing an estimated $11.5 billion each year.

Due to the enhanced specificity and level of detail of the ICD-10 code set, the transition is anticipated to have a significant impact on Medi-Cal, health plans, health care providers, and trading partners.
